Bachelor of Letters
The Bachelor of Letters was a post-graduate degree including a thesis, in which it was possible to concentrate on a single subject area. My area was Fine Arts and my thesis concerned folk tale themes and their appearance in contemporary children's television animation. It received first class honours.
University of Melbourne (1988)
Graduate Diploma in Applied Film and Television
The primary objective in this diploma was to make a short film. My film,
X times 2, was a music clip for the post punk band, Modern Jazz. It was
chosen as a 'short' for the Jim Jarmusch film Stranger than Paradise, for
its season at the Longford cinema. It was shown again last year, at the
2009 Melbourne Film Festival as part of the Punk Retrospective. The
Swinburne Film School is now part of the VCA.
Swinburne Film School, Swinburne Institute of Technology (1983)
Bachelor of Education
I majored initially in Music, and later in History and English Literature in
my under-graduate degree.
I am teacher trained for secondary school level.

Directors:
Noel Richards and Janice Filipuzzi.
N Squared is a company run by myself and my wife. When not
contracting to larger film companies, we create animations within our
own studio. My film-work credits can be found on IMDB.com (see link
below). Most of the animations created by N Squared are for TV
commercials. We were awarded a Melbourne Art Directors Club award
for Best Visual Effects in 1996, for a commercial for the Ford Taurus. I
am also involved with 'virtual' sculpture, with a piece included in the
Inside/Out exhibition at the Australian Centre for Craft and Design in
Sydney.
On the Inside/Out website go to 'Artist'/'Noel Richards'.The section
entitled '3D Printing process' shows the fabrication of my work.

mentoring and teaching junior animators, direction and design.

do what later became possible on Adobe Photoshop. I worked on several
visualisations including a promotional poster for the company.

The Video Paint Brush Company, Melbourne
VPB was a pioneer company in the field of Computer Imagery. I was
with them for six years during which time I worked on some ground-

1988 was the first in Australia to be an entirely computer-generated
character animation. Similarly the Aero TVC of 1990 was one of the very
early computer simulations (liquid chocolate). I was the Senior animator
on both of these TVCs.
During this period (in my spare time!) I also wrote, directed and
animated a short animation entitled One Complete Revolution. It was
shown at the 1990 Melbourne Film Festival, and later purchased by SBS
for the Eat Carpet series.
