Bachelor of Letters
The Bachelor of Letters was a post-graduate degree including a thesis, in which it was possible to concentrate on a single subject area. My area was Fine Arts and my thesis concerned folk tale themes and their appearance in contemporary children's television animation. It received first class honours. University of Melbourne (1988) Graduate Diploma in Applied Film and Television The primary objective in this diploma was to make a short film. My film, X times 2, was a music clip for the post punk band, Modern Jazz. It was chosen as a 'short' for the Jim Jarmusch film Stranger than Paradise, for its season at the Longford cinema. It was shown again last year, at the 2009 Melbourne Film Festival as part of the Punk Retrospective. The Swinburne Film School is now part of the VCA. July 1991 – present N Squared Pty Ltd Directors: Noel Richards and Janice Filipuzzi. N Squared is a company run by myself and my wife. When not contracting to larger film companies, we create animations within our own studio. My film-work credits can be found on IMDB.com (see link below). Most of the animations created by N Squared are for TV commercials. We were awarded a Melbourne Art Directors Club award for Best Visual Effects in 1996, for a commercial for the Ford Taurus. I am also involved with 'virtual' sculpture, with a piece included in the Inside/Out exhibition at the Australian Centre for Craft and Design in Sydney. April 2002 – February 2010 Complete Post, Melbourne I was contracted via N Squared to build the Animation and Visual Effects Department. It grew from two artists in 2002 and fluctuated between four and seven artists, before it was dissolved in February 2010. July 2001 – April 2002 Photon VFX, Gold Coast, Queensland Between the years 1999 and 2002, I was contracted at various times to Photon VFX, which has its base on the Warner Bros Lot on the Gold coast. I was employed for the above period as a digital effects supervisor on the film, Visitors. I directed a team of animators and compositors, in the creation of the digital effects for this film. November 1996 – September 1997 Dfilm, Sydney Dfilm was a subsidiary of the large Sydney Film Laboratory, Atlab. It was set up to create the visual effects on Dark City and later, The Matrix. I was one of the lead animators on the feature film Dark City. I was responsible for the creation of a series of visual effects which included both animation and compositing. November 1994 – April 1995 ARRI TV, Munich, Germany I was invited to work with the fledgling Film and TV Services, within the large German company, famous for the Arriflex camera. I worked on the very first film of what is now a credit list of over two hundred. Lead 3d Computer animator.
March 1992 – December 1992 RMIT University of Technology I lectured part-time for a year at RMIT in the Advanced Diploma of Multimedia course. The course has subsequently become a Degree course and the current Head of Department is one of my ex-students. Lecturer in animation (part-time)
October 1991 – March 1992 Visuals Spa, Milan, Italy I took a sabbatical from animation to work in the (then!) new area of digital printing and photography. Visuals had a Quantel Graphics Paintbox. This was a dedicated hardware/software machine designed to do what later became possible on Adobe Photoshop. I worked on several visualisations including a promotional poster for the company. August 1986 – June 1991 The Video Paint Brush Company, Melbourne VPB was a pioneer company in the field of Computer Imagery. I was with them for six years during which time I worked on some ground- breaking television commercials. The Smarties Pack O'Fun TVC of 1988 was the first in Australia to be an entirely computer-generated character animation. Similarly the Aero TVC of 1990 was one of the very early computer simulations (liquid chocolate). I was the Senior animator on both of these TVCs. During this period (in my spare time!) I also wrote, directed and animated a short animation entitled One Complete Revolution. It was shown at the 1990 Melbourne Film Festival, and later purchased by SBS for the Eat Carpet series. 3d Computer Animator and later Senior animator
November 1985 – July 1986 Computer Pictures, Melbourne Computer Pictures was one of only two CGI companies in Melbourne at the time. Our main work was the creation of logo animations. 3d Computer animator
