2012-2013 Nurses’ Letter Regarding Administration of Medication Including
Over-the-Counter Medications
As you know, Ranney School Health Office maintains Standing Physician Orders for the administration
of Advil, Tylenol, and Benadryl (calculated by student’s weight). This means that Advil, Tylenol, and
Benadryl can be given to your child with provided parental consent, and notification at time of
administration.
Our policy for Advil, Tylenol and Benadryl medications allows for the Ranney School Health
Office to administer these medications to your child without any additional doctor’s order from your
child’s private pediatrician; and without needing to bring in these medications. Ranney School
Health Office will provide these medications in their stock. Any other “OVER THE COUNTER”
medications will require a doctor’s order.
Tylenol and/or Advil can be given for high fevers, headaches, cramps, etc. Benadryl will be given for
minor allergic reactions or allergies, where an epi-pen injection is not necessary. Because communication
with the parents of our students remains a priority, notification to the parent(s) will be made and verbal
consent will be obtained before any of these “over- the-counter” medications will be administered. In
order to assist our Health Office, we ask that you check off the appropriate space on the 2012-2013
Emergency Medical Form if you would like your child to be able to receive these medications on an as
needed basis.
Our policy for all PRESCRIPTION Medication Administration will go unchanged:
1. ANY PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION to be given to a student during school hours MUST BE
BROUGHT TO THE NURSE by a parent for approval. NO Medication (PRESCRIPTION or
NON-PRESCRIPTION) may be carried by a student and self-administered. The exception to this
rule applies to students approved by their physician to self-administer medication for a potentially
life threatening illness. These students must visit the nurse to review their medications and
administration techniques, as well as provide the appropriate paperwork.
2. All students receiving PRESCRIPTION medications at school MUST have the following:
a. Written orders from the DOCTOR including child’s full name, medication, and reason for
medication, date, time, dosage and possible side effects (please use accompanying medication
authorization form).
b. A NOTE from the PARENT requesting administration of the medication at school, including child’s
full name, time, dosage and reason for medication (please use accompanying medication
c. The MEDICATION must be brought to the nurse in the ORIGINAL CONTAINER with
appropriate labeling by the pharmacy.
d. All medications will be locked in the health office and administered by the nurse. Thank you for your cooperation, and the timely return of all medical paperwork to the Health Office this summer. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the Health Office directly at (732) 720-6825.
